Bridging the Coaching Gap in the SW

Zone Rep & FFSW Chairman, Steve Hawkins, has been instrumental in guiding the implementation of a Regional Coaches Hub in the South West.  Steve and fellow committed coach and football volunteer, Ray Anderson have come together to get the plan off the ground.

The concept behind the Hub is to network coaches within the region, helping to share ideas and steer a direction for future development of the sport and its valuable assets, coaches and potential coaches, within the South West.  By providing a sound platform for communication and education we hope to be able to more effectively share vital new coaching information and skills and to create opportunities to educate and mentor new coaches as well as to bring our more experienced coaches into line with FFA curriculum and best and latest coaching practises.

Ray, a long time player and coach both in the Metro and now for 3 years in the SW region, has already brought some fresh and innovative ideas to the coach hub concept and is keen to co-ordinate the activities of the hub to the benefit of all coaches, players, clubs and associations within the region.  Ray has been appointed by the FFSW Board as the Regional Coach Development Co-ordinator.

It is envisaged that each of the 5 Regional Associations will appoint a committed coach in the role of Coach Development Co-Ord for their respective associations and that each club within these associations also appoint a Coach Development Officer to provide links at all levels.

With Ray’s assistance, the Association CDC's will form the top tier of the Coaching Hub collecting and collating information from their Club CDO's, discussing problems, sharing effective and innovative ideas and providing feedback and suggested direction to the FFSW Board, who in turn can determine what resources are available to implement change and provide development opportunities.

The Board have prioritised Coach Education for 2010, an area they believe to be of utmost importance for the future success of our region and its players.  The Board see these initiatives as the first building blocks for a solid foundation to sustainability and self sufficiency.

With some planned technical direction for the SW, the Board are confident they are ensuring the best possible education and the most up to date information available, and with new education plans soon to be released from FFA coming into effect in 2010 (see Coach Education 2010) this should make every step that bit easier for our valuable and committed volunteers, without sacrificing quality education and delivery within the region.

We envisage that those coaches involved in the Hub, both on an Association and Club level, will be given every educational opportunity the FFSW can make available with the assurance that they will then have the skills and understanding to share this knowledge and mentor their respective club coaches.  As important as the skills and drills are, the FFSW Board see a need to ensure that the appropriate culture of coaching be correctly achieved within the region.
